Harlequin Ichthyiosis, A terrifying Genetic Disease.
Medical treatmen has allowed babies with this rare genetic disorder to live for a few years insted of a few days. This condition is called Harlequin Type Ichthyiosis, the rarest and most severe form of ichthyiosis. When people are born with this disease, they are very limited, with many symptoms; dry skin, tight eyes, skin peeling or shredding, deformities, etc. These babies must be carried imediatly after birth to intensive care unit, they have very little chances of surviving, but it is possible. Most of these people are born premature. just adding to the complications. |
Long-Term effects include; loss of hair, dry skin, red skin, skin flakes and peeling. limited movement of arms, and no eyelids. The Harlequin part of the name got its part from the newborns, as when they are born they are covered in thick plates of dry skin that are rhombus shaped, which look like a harlequin costume. When people see a person with this disease they mostly think three things; (based on real experiences) they are terribly sunburned, they are about to die, or they are sick. The photo is from a areal baby, a survivor of harlequin ichthyiosis, a 6 week old (three years old now) baby called Brenna.
