SPOILER ALERT! The Death Cure, written by James Dashner (Final Book of the Maze Runner Series), is a short action novel with many settings, but mostly taken placen inside Denver and its outskirts, also the WICKED Main Headquarters (As seen in picture). The story is narrated in perspective of a young boy named Thomas, in limited third person. The Story starts in WICKED's Main Headquarters, where Thomas and his friends are being kept. He, along with all the subjects, escape in two Bergs and fly to Denver, a still-standing city after the sun flares, where they have some problems as they discover what the world has become, they also get to know a company known as "The Right Arm," which number one´s purpose is to take down WICKED. One of their friends, Newt, is discovered to not be inmune to the flare, he then slowly turns into a crank that with his last bit of sanity, tells Thomas to kill him, and he does. The |
Right Arm abducts Thomas and other inmunes, and send him back to WICKED, using him as a distraction to they can break into the building and plant bombs. After WICKED is taken down, Thomas and all the inmunes escape the building through a Flat Trans, but unfortunately, Teresa, one of Thomas´ best friends, dies saving him at the end, where the inmunes end up in a far away jungle, away from all the problems of the scorched and diseased world.
My opinion in this book is mostly positive, it is incredible to transport yourself into this world filled with Cranks and WICKED and Sun Flares, I think it is worth reading even if it is a little bit sad or tragic, as no one is happy seeing two main characters, who have become such an important part of this series, who we have come to know and love, die in one single novel. This book wasn´t as filled with action as the last two, but it is because this is an ending, not made to create more problems, but also because it is set in a more pacific setting, even if it feels like a bad imagery in your head as you visualize what could be not impossible for the world once to become, with the solar storm occuring in 2015 and 2016, and the new deadly viruses mutating. This book is so exiting, so sad, and so "closing-up," that even if it may feel like another ending of the story would´ve left us more satisfied, the author chose a good way to end the series, with a swing, answering all the questions you had while reading The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, like if the world was still alive, if there were normal people or functioning cities, or if WICKED is good, I would recommed this book to people that don´t like to read much, as people wo like to read a lot, like me, get really attached to the story and the book is just traumatizing. And after finishing this series, I can only say; "WICKED is not good."
